Minors
Students may choose to complete the following minors in addition to their Bioengineering degrees. In most cases, Bioengineering students may select technical electives or humanities, social science and multicultural electives to partially fulfill the requirements shown below. Please consult the University of ToledoÌýÌýfor specific coursework requirements on these and other minors:
Minor in BusinessÌý
Engineering students may earn a Minor in Business by earning a C or better in a total
of six business courses (18 credit hours) and by satisfying an economics requirement.
The economics requirement for the minor can be fulfilled with the completion of MIME
2600 - Engineering Economics, which also counts as a technical elective. Please see
theÌýCollege of Business AdministrationÌýfor more details.
The College of Business Administration is also pleased to announce a new minor in Entrepreneurship, Small Business and Family Business for non-majors. We highly recommend this minor for any students that are considering careers in biomedical industry or in private medical practice. For more details, please see theÌýEntrepreneurship minor for non-majorsÌýwebsite.
Minor in BiologyÌý
A minimum of 22 hours of biology (BIOL) courses is required for a minor in Biology.
The 22 hours must include: BIOL 2150, 2160, 2170 and 2180, and 12 hours of 3000-level
or higher Biology courses. Note that 9 hours of 3000-level BIOL courses may count
as technical electives for students not pursuing the pre-med option. Interested students
should contact theÌýBiology DepartmentÌýfor more details.
Minor in ChemistryÌý
A minimum of 22 hours of chemistry (CHEM) courses is required for a minor in Chemistry.
The 22 hours must include: CHEM 1230, 1240, 1280, 1290, 2410, 2420, 2450 and 2470.
All Bioengineering students are required to take CHEM 1230, 1240, 1280 and 1290; students
pursuing the pre-med option are also required to take CHEM 2410, 2420, 2450 and 2470.
Therefore all Bioengineering students complete 10 hours of Chemistry and must complete
12 more hours for a minor in Chemistry; 9 of these hours may count as technical electives.
Pre-med students complete 18 hours of Chemistry and must complete only 4 more hours
for a minor in Chemistry; 3 of these hours may count as technical electives. Interested
students should contact theÌýChemistry DepartmentÌýfor more details.
Minor in Foreign LanguagesÌý
A minimum of 21 - 22 hours is required for the minor in French, German, Japanese or
Spanish. In the modern languages, all course work must be in the same language and
at the 3000-level or higher. Some courses may also be used as Humanities electives.
Interested students should contact theÌýForeign Languages DepartmentÌýfor more details.
Minor in MathematicsÌý
A minimum of 22 hours of mathematics (MATH) courses is required for a minor in Mathematics.
The 22 hours must include: MATH 1860, 1890, 2850, and one of 2860, 3610 OR 4680. The
remaining hours must be courses that are acceptable toward a major in Mathematics,
and must be approved by an advisor in the Department of Mathematics. Bioengineering
students are required to take MATH 1850, 2850 and 2860; therefore students must take
MATH 1890 and 8 hours of upper level MATH courses that may count as technical electives.
Interested students should contact theÌýÌýfor more details.
Minor in MusicÌý
A minimum of 22 hours is required for the minor in music; 25 hours is required for
a minor in the Recording Arts. Students electing to pursue a minor in music must choose
one of the following areas of concentration: Jazz, Instrumental, Vocal, Keyboard,
Music Theory or Music History. Interested students should contact the Music DepartmentÌýfor more details.
Minor in Renewable EnergyÌý
A minimum of 21 hours is required for the renewable energy minor. The 21 hours must
include: PHYS 3400, GEPL/EEES 2200, CHEM 3810, ECON 3240 or PSC 4340, a minimum of
3 hours of approved coops in a renewable energy related area and 6 hours of other
approved courses. Interested students should visit theÌýPhysics & Astronomy DepartmentÌýwebsite for more details.
