GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Medical Practice Management explores and analyzes methods of organizing, delivering,
financing, and evaluating health care provided in medical practices in the United
States. The purpose of the elective is to introduce students to fundamental business
aspects of the practice of medicine. Domains explored may include operations management,
financial management, human resource management, organizational governance, patient-centered
care, risk and compliance management, facilities planningtransformative healthcare
delivery, and marketingorganizational governance.
The elective will meet eight times (12 hours), and will include lecture, case analysis, and small-group discussion and presentation. Students will be required to complete one-half hour of independent study (i.e., readings, videos, etc.) per topic in preparation for, as well as post a brief reflection following, each evening session (4 hours). Students also must attend at least one-half of the Business of Medicine Organization business meetings and educational events (2 hours).

- Describe financial systems that can be implemented to ensure a profitable medical practice. (EPOs: MK-5, SBP-1, SBP-4)
- Discuss how a human resources staffing plan can be used to achieve and enhance organizational performance. (EPOs: MK-5, SBP-1, SBP-4)
- Describe elements of facility planning and design that enhance patient comfort and improve practice productivity. (EPOs: MK-5, SBP-1, SBP-4)
- Explain how elements of an effective risk and compliance management program can be used to improve medical practice performance. (EPOs: MK-5, SBP-1, SBP-4)

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM OBJECTIVES:
- MK-5 Identify the core principles of health systems science and its impact on patients and populations.
- SBP-1 Assess the roles and responsibilities of physicians and other healthcare professionals in various models of healthcare organizations and determine the impact of finances/economics on delivery of health care.
- SBP-4 Respond to the larger context of systems of healthcare through effective use of systems resources, coordination of care, and practices that enhance quality and safety.
QUALITY ASSURANCE: Ongoing student feedback will be elicited as the elective progresses. Students will complete an evaluation of the elective at its conclusion.
PREREQUISITES: First- or second-year medical student in good academic standing.
