Many of our students choose to volunteer at the CommunityCare Clinic, which delivers free, convenient, quality health care to the underserved populations in the Toledo community.

Summer Educational Opportunities for Medical Students

After the first year of medical school, many of our students take part in these paid opportunities:

  • Community Health Project: Students work with local social service agencies.
  • Family Practice Preceptorship: Students learn the basics at a family practice office in a rural/underserved area.
  • Medical Education Preceptorship: Students help the gross anatomy faculty to prepare prosected (i.e. pre-dissected) specimens and brief lesson plans.

Summer Research Preceptorship for Medical Students

We offer a variety of paid, summer research experiences following students’ first year of medical school. They can work side-by-side with a faculty member, performing a variety of lab or clinical techniques and experiments. Recent projects include:

  • The incidence and outcomes of intraparenchymal kidney disease in a renal artery stent trial
  • The role of CD47-SIRPalpha interactions in xenotransplantation
  • Pain scores among ED patients: comparison by ED diagnosis
  • A review and discussion of ethical issues related to paired kidney exchanges and chain kidney transplantation
  • Communication with patients in spinal immobilization

Ruth M. Hillebrand Clinical Skills Center

The Ruth M. Hillebrand Clinical Skills Center is a facility for student training and assessment with standardized patients.

Our students begin practicing interviewing skills in their first year at the center, culminating in developing, supporting and defending a diagnosis. By the third year, our students participate in rotation-based Objective Structured Clinical Evaluations, which are designed to model the Step 2 CS USMLE board certification taken after the completion of the third year clerkships.

The Academic Testing Center provides a huge convenience for our students, in that they do not have to travel elsewhere to take their National Board Examinations computerbased test (USMLE steps I, II and III). We are one of only eight schools in the country that offer this on campus.

The center has been designed to be the optimum environment for our students to perform at their personal best, with amenities such as stress-relievers, television, kitchen and lounge areas, and convenient parking.

Interprofessional Immersive Simulation Center

The Interprofessional Immersive Simulation Center houses a comprehensive range of state-of-the-art technology to allow our students to simulate working as members of an interdisciplinary medical team and to practice their skills on high-tech simulation models. We also are among the first health science campuses in the nation to incorporate I-Space™ – a four-sided virtual immersive room, which can create virtual images to allow students to travel through the heart of a human body or experience being inside a human blood cell.
