Degree Requirements
Toledo Law's J.D. degree requirements are designed to enable you to achieve progress in connection with Student Learning Outcomes. For more information, review the college's Academic Rules and Course Descriptions.
Requirements for Graduation
Students must complete 89 credit hours to graduate. In addition to a variety of required courses, you may also select from a broad range of electives, including substantive law courses, legal clinics, simulation courses, and field placements.
You must take the following basic required courses, typically in your first year.
- Civil Procedure - Pleading and Practice
- Constitutional Law - Structure
- Contracts I and II
- Criminal Law
- Lawyering Skills I and II
- Property - Fundamentals of Ownership
- Property - Transactions and Land Use
- Torts
Additionally, the following upper-level courses are required for graduation.

- Constitutional Law - Rights
- Evidence
- Legal Ethics
- Experiential Learning Requirement
- Upper-Level Writing Requirement
Upper-Level Writing Requirement
Each student must complete two writing experiences after their first year. Generally, only one experience may be completed per semester.
- Seminar course paper
- Advanced Research and Writing paper
- Independent Research paper
- Comment produced by editors of the Law Review
Experiential Learning Requirement
Toledo Law offers a wide variety of experiential learning courses providing substantial instruction in professional skills, which are essential to your success as a practicing attorney. Law students are required to take at least 6 credits of experiential learning courses in clinics, externships, or simulation courses.
