Program Highlights

  • Our 24/7 Stroke Team Physicians are an integral part of an 18-hospital Stroke Network that covers northwest Ohio and southern Michigan.
  • University of Toledo Medical Center is a Primary Stroke Center accredited by the The Joint Commission since 2005.
  • Our Stroke Team consists of fellowship-trained stroke neurologists, neurointerventionalists, a dedicated stroke nurse and nurse practitioner, and the staff in the Emergency Department, radiology, and the laboratory.
  • We offer research protocols for both acute stroke and stroke prevention.
  • We offer educational opportunities for medical students, fellows, doctors, nurses and the general public and support groups for stroke survivors, caregivers and supporters

Education

  • 2 ACGME accredited Vascular Neurology fellowship positions
  • Neurointerventional department-based fellowship
  • 3-month resident and 1-week medical student rotations on stroke service
  • Didactic courses for medical students and residents

Treatment Advances

  • Tissue plasminogen activator (tPA), an FDA approved treatment of acute stroke, requires expertise.
  • Mechanical thrombectomy to remove clots in the brain
