Resident Eligibility and Selection

The Pediatric Residency Education program must select individuals appropriately qualifiedÌýto enter and complete a graduate medical education curriculum in Pediatrics.

PURPOSE:

This policy will ensure fair and equitable selection of qualified physicians to enter into PediatricÌýtraining at The University of Toledo (¹û¶³´«Ã½).

PROCEDURE:

Resident Eligibility:

Applicants with one of the following qualifications are eligible for appointment to ¹û¶³´«Ã½ residency programs:

• Graduates of medical schools in the U.S. and Canada accredited by the Liaison CommitteeÌýon Medical Education (LCME)
  • Candidates must have taken and passed USMLE Step 2CK prior to rank order due date
Graduates of schools of osteopathic medicine in the U.S., accredited by the AmericanÌýOsteopathic Association (AOA).
• Candidates must have taken and passed EITHER USMLE Step 2CK OR COMLEX Level 2CE
• Graduates of medical schools outside the U.S. and Canada who meet one of the followingÌýqualifications:
  • Have received a currently valid certificate from the Educational CommissionÌýfor Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG), or;
  • Have a full and unrestricted license or training certificate to practiceÌýmedicine in the state of Ohio
  • Additionally, preference will be given to those who:
    • Have graduated from medical school within the last 5 years
    • Recommended score of 230 or above on USMLE Step 2CK. All exams should be passed on first attempt
    • Have at least one year clinical experience in the United States through practice, internships or externships. Observerships are not considered.

Resident Selection:

The ¹û¶³´«Ã½ Pediatric Residency Program selects from among eligible applicants on theÌýbasis of their preparedness and ability to benefit from the program to which they areÌýappointed. Aptitude, academic credentials, personal characteristics and ability toÌýcommunicate are considered in the selection.

The Graduate Medical Education Committee and Graduate Medical Education programs have as their policy to consider all candidates for graduate medical education regardless of race, sex, creed, nationality, or sexual orientation. Performance in medical school, personal letters of recommendation, achievements, humanistic qualities, and qualities thought important to the desired specialty will be reviewed in the selection process.

The Pediatric Residency Program participates in the inÌýselecting residents. Out-of-match positions are not available.
